Dittisham

The pretty Dart-side village of Dittisham is only a mile away, with 2 pubs and an sea-food cafe. Dittisham offers a great base for boating along the river to Dartmouth or up to Totnes. Kids will love the excellent crabbing you can do from the pontoon. A short ferry ride will take you to the National Trust property and gardens of Greenway, the former holiday residence of Agatha Christie.

Local Information / Provisions

The Red Lion Inn down the road in Dittisham is also the village shop and post office it sells newspapers and has a good range of essential groceries. Sainsburys is the nearest large supermarket about 3 miles away on the road to Dartmouth. Lidl is also on the road to Dartmouth just beyond Sainsburys next to the Leisure Centre. Marks and Spencers Simply Food is in Dartmouth opposite the pay and display car park. The Smith Street Deli in Dartmouth sells an array of delicious local cheeses and other deli counter items. They also serve great coffee and light lunches. Saveurs in Dartmouth just off the Market Square is a superb French Patisserie selling delicious freshly baked bread and sweet and savoury treats to eat in or take out and this is opposite Macabes the local butcher and round the corner from Jilly’s Farm Shop which is the other side of the Market Square by the car park specialising in her own locally bred delicious pork and also selling a good variety of fresh local fruit and veg.

There are numerous pubs and restaurants in Dittisham, Dartmouth and the surrounding area. The Ferry Boat Inn Dittisham 01803 722368 Good pub food down by the pontoon. The Anchorstone Café Dittisham 01803 722365. Excellent seafood with terrace offering great views of the Dart. The Malsters Arms in Tuckenhay 01803 732350 Fantastic waterside pub serving local food and with a relaxed atmosphere in a stunning location. The Café at Sharpham Vineyard 01803 732178 Great locally made British wine to taste and buy along with delicious Sharpham Cheeses to sample at the lovely outdoor café/restaurant, which is only open for lunch from April to September. The Seahorse Restaurant Dartmouth 01803 835147 Local Celebrity Chef Mich Tonks’ superb restaurant offering locally landed seafood as well as locally sourced meat. Kendricks Dartmouth 01803 832328 offers a varied menu ranging from fresh seafood to burgers, ribs and Tex- Mex. Rockfish in Dartmouth 01803 832800 Up-market fish and chips to eat in or take-away also owned by Mitch Tonks.
Spice Bazaar Dartmouth 01803 832224 Indian restaurant and take-away. Slightly further afield, but well worth the drive: The Venus Café at Blackpool Sands 01803 771800 Serving quality local organic seafood, burgers, pasties and salads. In a truly stunning location right on the beach. Also open in the evenings in the summer. In the village of Dittisham every Wednesday evening 17.15 to 1815 is a van serving the best fish and chips.

Things to Do

Walking There are many walks in the area taking in the countryside and the coastline. Some walks can be started from Little Coombe Farm or a short drive away. A great day’s walking can be had on Dartmoor, which is approximately 45 minutes away.
Beaches There are several beaches nearby, Blackpool Sands is the closest with a shingle beach only 10 minutes drive away. It has a café that is also open in the evening. Bantham Beach is a huge wide beach and excellent for…… Surfing (hire boards from TriOcean Surf in the nearby village of Churchstow.) Windsurfing, Paddle Boarding, Kite Flying etc. The Sloop Inn in Bantham has a good menu for kids and adults and is hugely popular. Slapton and Torcross Beach is a 5km stretch of Beach with the beachside Start Bay Inn pub serving excellent fish & chip, The Sea Breeze Café and The Boathouse Restaurant/Bar, all at Torcross end. Crabbing Dittisham pontoon is a great place to crab – the Red Lion Inn sells lines, buckets and bait.
Boating Boat hire (sailing/motor),  paddle boarding and kayaking in Dittisham is available through Dittisham Boats run from the pontoon in the village. Sailing tuition is also available if required.  Mountain bikes are available to rent with some of our properties at Little Coombe Farm.


Other activities

There are a number of other activities available nearby which include the Steam trains from Kingswear to Paignton and from Totnes to Buckfastleigh. Pleasure boat trips on the River Dart from Dartmouth to Totnes. Golf at the nearby Dartmouth Golf and Country club, Woodlands Leisure Park for children – a fantastic day out for the kids, especially on a rainy day and only 10mins away! Paignton Zoo and the Plymouth Aquarium are all a short drive away. The Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Helligan are also both well worth a visit whilst in this part of the world and make great day trips. The historical towns of Totnes and Dartmouth are well worth a visit.
